Poya days 2026
A Poya day is the full-moon day of each lunar month. Under the Holidays Act every Full Moon Poya Day is a public holiday and a bank holiday, and under the Shop and Office Employees Act every shop and office employee must be given the day off; an employee who works on a Poya day must be paid at least one and a half times the normal daily rate. Sale of alcohol and fresh meat is restricted on Poya days. 2026 has 13 Poya days, including an Adhi (extra) Poya.

Public, bank and mercantile holidays: what is the difference?
Three lists exist because two laws and one annual Gazette shape the calendar.
- Public holidays are declared under the Holidays Act No. 29 of 1971. Section 2 makes every Full Moon Poya Day and every Sunday a public holiday and a bank holiday; Section 3 adds the days in the Act’s First Schedule. Section 5 makes a public holiday a dies non, a day that does not count for legal deadlines. Government offices and schools close.
- Bank holidays are the Poya days, Sundays and the days in the Act’s Second Schedule, published each year by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Banks close; nobody can be compelled to make a payment on a bank holiday or the day after it.
- Mercantile holidays are the holidays the Minister declares by Gazette for shop and office employees under Section 7 of the Shop and Office Employees Act, together with the Poya days under Section 7A. This is the list a private employer follows. The Act caps the Section 7 declaration at nine days a year.
“Every person employed in or about the business of a shop or office shall be allowed a holiday with full remuneration on each of such days, being public holidays within the meaning of the Holidays Act, as are declared by the Minister, by Order published in the Gazette, to be holidays for the purposes of this section, so however, that number of days so declared shall not exceed nine.” Shop and Office Employees Act, section 7(1)
Which holidays must an employer give, and what to pay for working on them?
For shop and office employees the rules come from sections 7, 7A and 7B of the Shop and Office Employees (Regulation of Employment and Remuneration) Act. Wages Board trades follow their own board decisions, which are usually similar.
| Situation | Rule | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Declared mercantile holiday (the Gazette list) | A paid holiday for every shop and office employee. | s.7(1) |
| Employee works on a declared mercantile holiday | Only with the Commissioner of Labour’s prior sanction, for a normal working period; then either a paid substitute holiday on or before 31 December of the same year, or pay at double the ordinary daily rate. | s.7(2) |
| Full Moon Poya Day | A paid holiday for every shop and office employee. | s.7A |
| Poya Day falls on a declared holiday, a weekly holiday or a weekly half-holiday | No additional holiday in lieu. | s.7A proviso |
| Employee works on a Poya Day | Permitted for a normal working period; pay at not less than one and a half times the normal daily rate. | s.7B |
| Public holiday that is not on the mercantile list | No statutory entitlement for private-sector shop and office staff; many employers grant it by policy. | Holidays Act s.3 vs S&O Act s.7 |
Show holiday pay as its own line on the payslip (for example “Poya day work, 1.5×” or “Holiday work, 2×”) so the employee and any inspector can see the rate applied. Read the companion guides on overtime and no-pay calculation and annual and casual leave.

Special and one-off holidays
The government can declare additional holidays by Gazette during the year, for example for elections, national events or an extra Adhi Poya, and can move an Islamic festival holiday when the moon is sighted on a different day. Treat a declared special holiday exactly like the mercantile holidays above if the Gazette says it applies to the private sector; if it is declared for the public sector only, it is at your discretion. We add any change to this table within two working days and regenerate the calendar file; the review date at the top tells you when it was last checked.
Do this automatically
Humanised loads the Poya and mercantile calendar into attendance and leave, applies 1.5× and 2× holiday rates in payroll, and never counts a Poya day as an absence. From LKR 10,000/month for up to 15 employees.

Is today a mercantile holiday in Sri Lanka?
The answer block at the top of this page is computed from the Gazette list in Sri Lanka time and tells you whether today and tomorrow are mercantile holidays, and when the next one is.
How many mercantile holidays does Sri Lanka have in 2026?
The full count is in the first paragraph of this page and in the table, which marks every date as public, bank or mercantile. Private employers follow the mercantile column.
What is the difference between a public holiday and a mercantile holiday?
Public holidays are declared under the Holidays Act No. 29 of 1971 and apply to government offices and schools. Mercantile holidays are the days the Minister declares by Gazette under section 7 of the Shop and Office Employees Act, capped at nine a year, plus every Poya day under section 7A. Private-sector shop and office staff are entitled to the mercantile list.
Are Poya days mercantile holidays?
Yes. Every Full Moon Poya Day is a paid holiday for shop and office employees under section 7A of the Shop and Office Employees Act, and a public and bank holiday under section 2 of the Holidays Act.
What must I pay an employee who works on a Poya day?
At least one and a half times the normal daily rate, for a normal period of employment, under section 7B of the Shop and Office Employees Act.
What must I pay an employee who works on a mercantile holiday?
With the Commissioner of Labour’s prior sanction, the employee may work a normal period and must then get either a paid substitute holiday on or before 31 December of that year, or pay at double the ordinary daily rate (section 7(2)).
What happens when a Poya day falls on a Sunday or a weekly holiday?
No additional holiday is given in lieu (section 7A proviso). The same applies when it falls on a declared mercantile holiday.
Is Good Friday a mercantile holiday?
Check the table: the Gazette lists Good Friday as a public and bank holiday; whether it is also declared a mercantile holiday for shop and office employees is shown in the M column for the year.
Is Deepavali a mercantile holiday?
Deepavali is usually declared a public, bank and mercantile holiday. The table shows the exact 2026 status and date.
Do bank holidays apply to private companies?
Not as a staff entitlement. Bank holidays close banks and stop payments falling due; a private employer follows the mercantile list for holidays, though most treat 30 June and 31 December bank holidays as normal working days.
How do I add the holidays to Google Calendar or Outlook?
Download the .ics file from this page and import it, or open it directly on a phone. Each entry has a stable ID, so importing an updated file later replaces the entries instead of duplicating them.
Where do the dates come from?
From the Government Gazette that declares public, bank and mercantile holidays for the year, cross-checked with the Central Bank’s bank holiday list and the Ministry of Public Administration circular. The sources are linked at the bottom of the page.
