A basic fingerprint attendance machine costs from about LKR 22,000 in Sri Lanka (Hikvision DS-K1A8503EF) and LKR 35,000 to 44,000 for the common ZKTeco K14, K40 and K1000; face-recognition models run LKR 56,000 to 122,000. ZKTeco is the most widely stocked brand, with Hikvision behind it. The device records punches only; budget separately for the attendance software that turns punches into overtime, no-pay and payslips.

Prices below are what retailers showed on their product pages on 3 September 2026. Where a retailer states VAT is extra we say so; otherwise the figure is as listed. Two sites run by the same distributor showed different prices for the same model; we use the product-page price and note the higher list.

Fingerprint or face recognition: which should you buy?
Fingerprint terminals are cheaper and reliable in offices; they struggle with wet, worn or dirty fingers in kitchens, factories and field work, where face terminals clear a queue faster. Most face models also read a card or PIN as a fallback. Face terminals cost roughly twice as much at the entry level.

- A network point or Wi-Fi at the door, and a static IP if the software polls the device.
- A second device for a second door or branch.
- The reseller’s own “attendance software”, usually a Windows program that exports Excel; some sellers install it free.
- The person who downloads the log every month and turns it into overtime and no-pay, unless the device is connected to payroll software.
The machine is only half the system
A device knows who punched and when. Payroll needs late minutes against the shift the person was rostered for, overtime hours at 1.5× on the ÷240 rate within the 12-hour weekly cap, no-pay days, leave reconciled against absences, and the Poya and mercantile calendar. Which attendance machines work with HR software in Sri Lanka?

Questions to ask the seller before you pay
- Capacity: fingerprints and records, against your headcount with room to grow.
- Connectivity: TCP/IP or Wi-Fi, not USB-only, if software will read it.
- SDK or API access so your HR software can pull the log.
- Warranty length and whether it is carry-in.
- Local repair and a loan unit while yours is away.
- Whether a second device can join the same network and software.
